Try this spiced hot chocolate filled with warming spices and pure nuttiness. Finished with freshly whipped cream and a touch of cinnamon.
When it’s the colder months, sometimes all you need is a good old warm mug of hot chocolate. Or a little indulgent sweet drink after your Christmas dinner, whilst you get out the board games or watch a movie. Well at least that’s the case with my family. Personally I’m more of a coffee person than a hot chocolate, but to please the siblings, I make this spiced hot chocolate (my brother doesn’t drink coffee).
If I’m going to have a hot chocolate, I’m pretty fussy about it. On most occasions, the closest I get is a mocha, which I love. But for hot chocolate I prefer mine on the lesser end when it comes to sweetness as I’m a huge dark chocolate fan. I love warming spices especially when it’s cold as it always reminds me of chai. I’ve added nutella to this to give it that subtle nutty edge, In all honesty I’m not the hugest fan of nutella as it’s too sweet for me. However, the small amount here goes a long way!
This is super easy, creamy, and rich. What more could you want?
What you’ll need
- Whole milk or vegan milk alternative – preferable over skimmed/semi-skimmed as the higher fat content enhances the creaminess and richness
- Dark chocolate – I recommend around 50% strength for this, but you can use milk chocolate if you prefer
- Spices: cinnamon, nutmeg and ground cloves
- Nutella – adds that lovely nuttiness and helps with the creamy texture
- Vanilla extract – you’ll smell the vanilla as soon as it hits the milk – it’s amazing
- Cocoa powder – enhances the richness and decadence
- Espresso powder – optional but in a small amount it amplifies the cocoa flavour!
Making this spiced hot chocolate is as simple as throwing this all into a a saucepan and leaving it on a low simmer. You can even place this in a slow cooker on a low heat throughout the evening for people to help themselves! This recipe makes 2 mugs so feel free to scale up as desired.
